Edwin C Farrall Transport partners with Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) for Groundbreaking Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck Trial

Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS), the UK's first Hydrogen Fuel Cell truck OEM, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Edwin C Farrall Transport Ltd (Farrall’s Group) to explore the integration of Hydrogen Fuel Cell HGVs into the Farrall’s fleet.

Farrall’s Group is a third-generation family transportation company based in the northwest, and with a clear focus on delivering a sustainable road map of carbon emission reduction and management, has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with HVS to commit to zero emission commercial vehicle trials.

The MOA outlines the partnership's objective to provide the Farrall’s Group with HVS hydrogen fuel cell HGVs when these groundbreaking zero-emission vehicles become available for trial in late 2025. The sharing of vehicle data, TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) modelling, route planning, infrastructure support and performance optimisation are just some of the benefits of the MOA partnership.

Farrall’s Group started life back in 1956 when Eddie & Joan made the choice to buy an O’Type Bedford instead of getting married and founded Edwin C Farrall Transport. Since that day Team FG has continued to grow from strength to strength with a fleet of 70 vehicles and 100 trailers; 3 BRC AA accredited warehouses situated across the northwest; a vehicle workshop; a successful joint 4PL company FF&W, with fellow family business Fagan & Whalley; and a dedicated team of over 120 employees. One of the biggest green initiatives is the Farrall’s Group Family Forest. So far, over 1700 trees have been planted, which over their lifetime will capture the same amount of carbon as is produced by the Group in 1 year.

Based on HVS' conservative sales projections, by 2030 the new UK fleet of hydrogen HGVs displacing diesel vehicles could prevent more CO2 and noxious air emissions than the reported annual on-ground emissions of Heathrow airport.  

Green hydrogen is an infinitely renewable fuel.  It is made using renewable electricity to split water (H2O) into hydrogen and oxygen. In the fuel cell, hydrogen recombines with oxygen from the air to produce heat, power and water.  

Fuel Cells were invented in the UK by a Welsh scientist Sir William Grove in 1839.
